This summer our new second-floor exhibition room is packed with interesting, historic material about the Boys’ Brigade – historic photographs, booklets, medals, costumes, musical instruments and an amazing flag designed to be large enough to fly from a tower block in London.
The Boys’ Brigade (for those who are unaware) was the precursor to the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements which arose a generation later. It was a genuine Victorian childrens’ movement designed to give boys a taste of the outdoors and physical feats while training them in such diverse activities as community service, music and hymn-singing – the movement was always based on the Church, and still is.
For those who are interested in hearing more about the movement at first hand, and perhaps joining, Boys’ Brigade members will be available to talk to you.
Please note there is no wheelchair access to this exhibition, which is accessible by stair only.
Family Friendly activities provided by the Boys’ Brigade for children and families will be offered free of charge during the May half-term and Summer holidays. Please ring 01235 523703 for details.
