The fascinating story of dyeing.
Did you know that the dye "royal purple" was made from a type of shellfish? Over 8000 of them were needed to make 1 gram of dye, so only royalty could afford clothes dyed with it. An exhibition at the Vale and Downland Museum from 1 October until 8 November will include information about the fascinating history of dyeing.
A colourful range of handcrafted items will be on display. Many will have been dyed using "natural" dyes from plants, whilst synthetic dyes will have been used for others.
Demonstrations of weaving and spinning using dyed fibres and yarns will take place on some Saturdays during the exhibition and there will be opportunities to have a go at weaving. For details contact the museum or Angela Pawlyn on 01235 833361
